The Danish Working Environment Research Fund

The objective of the Danish Working Environment Research Fund is to strengthen Danish working environment research through the adoption of a research strategy and allocation of funds.

The Fund supports research and development in health and safety with a view to preventing and limiting forced retirement from the labour market due to physical or mental impairment, occupational accidents, work-related illnesses, etc.

In the period from 2003 to 2006, the Fund supported 45 projects with a total of DKK 154 million on the basis of the themes that the Fund was prioritising in the strategy for this period.

In the period 2007 to 2009, the Fund is managing more than DKK 175 million.  In order to implement the special funds allocated from the Finance Act for 2006, additional funds have been allocated in order to strengthen the Fund. This includes funds for implementing studies on occupational diseases aimed at the ongoing updating of the list of occupational diseases. The Fund will invite tenders for themes in a minimum of 2-3 rounds per year.

Its funds may, among other purposes, be used for:

  • Multi-annual funding for interdisciplinary research themes, typically as “wall-less” centres
  • Research funding for new, overlooked or unclarified topics, possibly through pilot and development projects
  • Retention of accumulated competencies.
The funds are allocated based on one or two-year notices advertised on the website of the Danish Working Environment Authority and in the daily newspapers.
